PINE WILT NEMATODE

The Pine Wilt Nematode is a deadly pest that is carried inside the saliva of Pine Sawyer Bugs.  The Pine Sawyer feeds on the tender and young shoots of pine needled trees.  The nematode is then transferred through the tissues of the tree, where they feed and multiply in the resin canals of the tree, blocking the flow of water and nutrients.

The host trees quickly die, showing major signs of dehydration.  Bark beeltes are then attracted to the stressed and dying tree where they transmit a fungi to the dead wood that the nematodes continue to multiply and feed on.

The nematodes are attracted to the pupae of the Sawyer Beetles, where they enter the respiratory system of the young Pine Sawyer Beetle, and are then carried to other trees once the adult Pine Sawyers emerge.

Species such as the Ponderosa were previously thought to be immune from the deadly effects of the Pine Wilt Nematode.  However, recent studies show this deadly pest spreading rapidly through Northern Colorado killing off a wide variety of pine needled trees, INCLUDING native Ponderosa, Austrian, and Scots Pine.

We are currently encouraging ALL of our customers to consider a preventative 2 year tree injection program to protect their High Value Trees.

These injections are applied in fall.  Injections are good for 2 years and not only help to protect against the Pine Wilt Nematode, but also provide protection against the damaging IPS Beetles, Pine Tip & Zimmerman Moths, and Pine Bark Beetles.
